2nd Step Towards New Focus: Return to Lifting

I am aware that there are some people who would consider focusing on both lifting and running to be splitting my focus…but I love ย lifting and am getting to like running and for now at least want to do both ๐Ÿ™‚

If I focus on both…it could be considered double the focus…

Well it could in my world ๐Ÿ˜€

When I was on my Personal Training Training course 2 weeks ago, I did some heavy squats and bench presses and it occurred to me that I haven’t really improved my lifting since the summer…

Admittedly I have had a shoulder/bicep injury which stopped me a little, but the general gist was the same as everything else recently. I haven’t stopped, I just haven’t put enough effort into improving!

Outside of PT sessions ย I just haven’t done enough lifting to actually get stronger. So, in keeping with the idea that the best way to get better at a thing is to do the thing, I went to the gym on Saturday morning and started picking up heavy things and putting them down again in different ways!

I went to the leisure centre that has the free weights room separate to the main gym, which allows it to have more heavy heavy stuff, it also (as I think I may have mentioned before) manages to look like a dingy basement despite being above ground. That last sentence makes it sound like an unpleasant place to be, but I actually really like it in there, when you walk in and look like you know what you are doing the guys seem to respect you and let you get on with things…albeit with a bit of offering to help you with the heavy plates…which is a little odd as if you couldn’t manage them you probably wouldn’t be putting the things on the bar, but that is beside the point ๐Ÿ™‚

I went in there and I did some real heavy (for me) lifting for the first time in ages, and it reminded me that I love it!! It also made me take my first ever gym selfie :-S (sorry)

excuse the look of concentration...
excuse the look of concentration…

I did this (very egocentric) thing for two reasons…

the first was so I could say…look at me about to do an 80kg deadlift! ๐Ÿ˜€

An 80kg deadlift by they way that was part (the top part) of a pyramid set of deadlifts… 8 @ 60 kg, 6 @ 70 kg, 2 @ 80kg ๐Ÿ˜€

the second reason was so I could say…woohoo look at my new amazing gym trousers!! they are funky camouflage leggings. This is remarkable and worth noting for two reasons. 1) I am wearing leggings in a public place where there are definitely people (as opposed to running in the country where there are few people and it is often dark). 2) they are not black!! this represents a massive leap forwards in confidence on my part!

(and yes I know that I am not yet an ideal shape for leggings…but there is an improvement there and only in the gym…)

That was Saturday and I have done more gym stuff since then, although not so heavy, but I am definitely going to continue as I love it (have I mentioned that?)!

Now all I need to do is make a coherent plan to balanceย running and lifting ๐Ÿ˜€

Besides…how can I be a superhero if I don’t get stronger!!

  1. Woohoo! I do both lifting and running albeit not as heavy lifting as you. I need both cardio and lifting/resistance. The lifting helps me with my running and swimming as stronger muscles = more power in my legs/arms/back. Keep enjoying the lifting and running ๐Ÿ˜€

      1. Not crazy, unless of course you try to put the amount of time in to each that you would put in if you were concentrating on one or the other and essentially doubling your workout time. Does that make sense? Choose your workouts wisely to get the most out of the time you have.

      2. hehehe…choosing wisely is always my problem..in the past I have pretty much tried to do the thing that you just said was crazy ๐Ÿ™‚

I intend to plan better this time ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Yay for heavy lifting! And for pyramid sets! And for funky leggings that you look gorgeous in!
I can’t wait for you to finish this plan of yours because I am totally stealing it! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. I can’t wait either… everything will be much quicker as I won’t have to spend hours deciding which thing to to…

the hard part will be planning my food!!

I am glad you like my leggings!! I love them and have ordered more in purple and a funky spotty pattern!! they are so comfy and quite supportive so you don’t just end up flobbering everywhere ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Flobbering is a definite no no. ๐Ÿ™‚

You’re building a food plan, too? Holy cow, mama! You are in beast mode now! I need to step up my game!

      2. I decided I am sick of my plateau, I am not where I want to be and it is time to make a concerted effort to get there!! ๐Ÿ™‚

the food plan will be the hardest!!

and no…no-one wants to flobber and it is a distinct possibility with leggings

      3. It’s the above the waist band flobbering that plagues me. Below is fine. It’s just that awful mess right over top. GAH! Hurry up with that plan, would you?

      4. they are fabletics

which has apparently been around in the states for a while but has only just made it over here, you have to sign up for a subscription, but if you do you get the first outfit for ยฃ22 and then you can unsubscribe and not pay more…I signed up with more than one email address…hence more than one set of leggings for cheap (which is sneaky but I don’t care)
if you sign up you can use my link and I get money…although I am not sure if it only works for the UK site, and you would probably be better using the US one but it is worth a try ๐Ÿ™‚

      5. I tried your link but it recognized my Canadian IP address and took me to the CA site. Sorry. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

This looks like pretty great value, Sam. Thanks for the tip. I think I might subscribe.

      6. that is ok ๐Ÿ™‚ it was worth a try…you never know!

it is good value, and I was surprised at how nice quality they are, especially the leggings which are lovely!
